Quillow

A quillow is a cozy and functional item that combines the comfort of a quilt with the convenience of a pillow. The good news is that you don’t have to buy a new quillow – you can easily transform your favorite quilt into a quillow with a few simple steps. Here’s how to make a quilt into a quillow:

Materials Needed:

  • Quilt
  • Coordinating fabric for the pillow portion
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Pins
  • Iron

Instructions:

Choose your quilt: Start by selecting a quilt that you love and is large enough to serve as a blanket and a pillow. Check to make sure it’s big enough to fold into a pillow that’s comfortable for you.

Cut the fabric for the pillow: Cut a piece of coordinating fabric that is three times the width and the same length as the quilt. For example, if your quilt measures 60 inches by 70 inches, cut a piece of fabric that is 180 inches by 70 inches.

Fold the fabric in half: Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the wrong side facing out.

Sew the sides: Sew the two short sides of the fabric together, leaving one of the long sides open. Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance and backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam.

Turn right side out: Turn the pillow portion right side out and press it with an iron.

Attach the pillow: Lay the quilt flat on the ground and position the pillow portion at one end of the quilt, with the open end facing down. Pin the pillow to the bottom of the quilt, aligning the edges.

Fold the quilt: Next, fold the quilt in half lengthwise, bringing the opposite end of the quilt up to meet the pillow portion. Make sure the edges are aligned and pin in place.

Sew the sides: Sew the two sides of the quilt together, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam.

Create the pocket: To create the pocket, fold the quilt in half again, this time bringing the top of the quilt down to meet the bottom. Be sure to keep the pillow portion on the outside of the quilt. Sew the sides together, leaving a 15-18 inch gap in the center of the quilt. This gap will serve as the opening for the pillow to be pulled into.

Turn the quillow right side out: Turn the quillow right side out through the gap. Push out the corners and press with an iron.

Insert the pillow: Insert the pillow into the opening and tuck it in to form a pillow. You now have a completed quillow!

Now that you know how to make a quillow, you can turn your favorite quilt into a functional and cozy accessory that you can take with you anywhere. Enjoy the comfort and convenience of your new quillow!
